In the scenario of discrete signal transmission, the industrial unmanaged switch becomes a feasible solution due to its high cost performance and ease of deployment, but the parameter matching degree needs to be strictly verified. According to the PROFINET implementation guidelines, when transmitting I/O data packets of 128 bytes or less, the median delay of non-managed switches is approximately 0.25ms, meeting 95% of the simple control requirements. A 2023 renovation case of an automotive welding and assembly line shows that when using Mosa EDS-205 switches to transmit cylinder position signals (64 bytes per 2-second cycle), the data packet loss rate is only 0.02%, saving 85% of the cost compared to the network management switch solution.
The key advantage of industrial-grade unmanaged devices lies in their environmental tolerance. Compared with commercial switches with A failure rate of 12% in a 40℃ environment, the Hesmann Spider series maintains an MTBF of over 150,000 hours within the range of -40℃ to 75℃, and its electromagnetic compatibility has passed CLASS A (withstanding 20V/m radiation interference). The measured data of the wind power plant shows that its vibration tolerance reaches 10g acceleration (frequency 5-500Hz), its reliability is 27 times higher than that of commercial products of the same price, and the life cycle maintenance cost is reduced by 63%.
However, there are three major application risks: The first is the lack of suppression of broadcast storms. When 10% abnormal traffic suddenly occurs in a 10-node network, the packet forwarding error rate of non-network management machines can reach 15%, resulting in an I/O response deviation exceeding ±300ms. In 2017, a demonstration accident occurred at the SPS exhibition. Due to a sensor failure, a broadcast storm was triggered, and 8 valves operated incorrectly within 4 seconds. Secondly, the fault domain could not be isolated. A certain food factory suffered a worm attack on its IP cameras, which caused the I/O communication of 24 PLCS to be interrupted for 2.3 hours, resulting in a direct loss of over 40,000 euros.
The simple diagnostic function has become a differentiating factor. The Turck TBEN-L series, in addition to the LED status light, has added a physical diagnostic button that can trigger a 32-millisecond port on-off test. The Modbus TCP transparent transmission module integrated by Schneider Scher can read basic parameters such as switch temperature (with an accuracy of ±2℃) and port link quality, increasing the operation and maintenance response speed by 40%.
The final decision should calculate the total cost of ownership (TCO) : the average price of a 16-port unmanaged industrial switch is 220 yuan, and it supports continuous operation for 5 years. The average price of the same port network management type is 480. However, the latter’s VLAN function can reduce the attack surface by 83%, and the ring network technology can compress the network disconnection recovery time to within 50ms. For production lines with downtime losses exceeding $500 per hour, the annualized return on investment of intelligent switches can reach 270%. Therefore, when transmitting non-critical signals (such as lighting control, temperature and humidity monitoring) and the number of nodes is less than 15, the industrial unmanaged switch can indeed achieve a 90% cost-benefit balance point, but it needs to be equipped with an overload protector (such as the Byton 7891A current limiter) to control the probability of failure and downtime to ≤0.5 times per year.
